Think about new cars for a second, they usually hit the showrooms around August / September depending on when they changed over the assembly lines and if it was a new model etc. Typically, they stop making a 'model year' around June or July, depending on inventory, and then make the changes to the assembly line during the plant shutdown, to produce the next model year.

Not all things I learn from LS1tech are good. I have a 98ws6 with the perimater bolt valve covers. It looks like any head chosen would be a up-grade for me. I was thinking of having my heads worked on, (the head shop here in houston) said they would P&P, new valve seats, and springs, take apart and put to gether for me for $800. Of course I would purchase new pacesetter LS6 heads for $1300 before I did that. I guess the good news is all I can do is improve.

If you're taking your motor out to freshen it up, you could have those "cheap" 241s waiting on a shelf for you. Before you put them on, to make it worth your time have them cut for bigger valves and have some bowl work done. You could pick up enough power this way to justify the swap without spending a lot of money for CNC ported heads.

I keep hearing that the 98 heads are the worst out there. Do they really flow that much worse than the 853's or the 241's? I am building a 370 and using my stock 98 heads for now and i keep hearing that im going to put down like 20 less hp than if i were using a newer head. Is there any truth to this?
Yeah maybe 5hp less than the 241 heads. Compare stock-headed '98 dyno results when equipped with long tubes and an LS6 intake to '01/02 cars. There certainly isn't a 20hp advantage for the latter years when both have the same supporting modifications.

I would atttribute most of the decrease in output to blow by in the older '98 motors.
Lastly, as a comparison looking at "budget" CNC LS6 heads, there will be some differences in flow that are probably similar to the small differences in the sandcast 98 heads to the latter years. No CNC LS6 head has a 20hp advantage on the other. They all make similar power even though flow is slightly different between them all.

OH! Let me point out my car, '98 Z28 with full bolt-ons and Mac headers. It trapped 110 mph at the track in the heat of summer. Compare this to my buddy's '01 car with true longtubes and 241 heads (everything else the same). There was less than 1mph difference in these cars. It's not like his car had an extra 3 mph on me.
Moral of the story is, 241 heads alone isn't going to give you a huge advantage over 1998 heads.

ok guys i could have sworn i have a "241" cast in my heads right next to the valve cover. and if i remember right "2241" cast on the head and also a 15XX number i have a 99 and as far as i know it was box stock when i bought it except for a k&n in the stock airbox think the last owner might have had a problem and the heads had to be changed under warrenty???
