detonation

My friend's engine ran out of coolant and made 3-4 bangs before he shut it down. This was at idle. After it cooled down he added coolant and started it right back up. Does detonation always mean a dead/damaged engine?

No everytime detonation occurs does not necesarily mean engine damage.
