close to final decisions on cam..

well its been about 2 months since ive started seriously thinking about a cam swap...at first i was very interested in the TR 224 cam..then thought about the 228 cam..and now im very interested in the TSP 231/237 cam -OR- LG G5X1 cam (228/232 .588/.574). the only reason im skeptical about not shooting for the TSP cam is because i dont know if i want a cam that close to .600 lift. my car will no longer be a daily driver after these mods. right now i have all the bolt ons, M6, stock rear end, LCAs + panhard bar, nittos. this car will basically be a street car, IT MIGHT see the track. so this is the set up im looking at right now..

cam- LG G5X1
P.R.- TSP Chromemoly. i believe 7.4" length?
springs- 918 of course..
timing chain- Rollmaster double-roller / LS2 (not sure)

im hoping a set up close to this will net me over 380 rwhp! ive added this all up and itll be around $900(including shipping) in parts. -NOT INCLUDING INSTALLATION-. so after installation/tuning im guessing itll be close to..i dont know just a guess but lets say around 1500-1700? so after this i really dont think my stock clutch will be enjoying it self, so im sure a new clutch will be coming in the picture soon..but thats a different story.

*one reason why i might want to chose the TSP cam is because i can buy the cam package deal for like $600 +/-. meaning i have more money for other mods such as subframe/clutch etc... im hoping to get my final decision by the end of this week so i can start ordering parts.
**another question i have is im totally stuck on which kind of LSA i would need. i love the choppyness of 112 and i love the smoothness of 114. i wouldnt care which one i got, but i dont want to lose my low end power...

so any comments/suggestions/criticism would be appreciated!!

Whatever you choose, get it on at least a 112LSA or better yet, a 110LSA. Most of the bigger duration cams with 114LSA or wider tend to be lacking in mid-range torque.

Definitely go with a LS2 timing chain. Thats what I did, and I'm so glad I didn't waste the money on the Double rollers. Those are really only necessary if you plan on playing with the timing of the cam.

nice thanks for the suggestions! im so stuck between these 2 cams right now its not even funny.. i have this weird feeling that the G5X1 is going to be a really good performing cam and ill kick my self in the ass later for not going with it!

I'd have to go with TSP 231/237 .598/.595 112

Actually I wouldn't get a cam that small but thats just me

sidewayz28 07-16-2006 09:15 PM

thanks for the response. do you have any perticular reason why?
haha yeah i think im pushing it with 230s duration :(

Boostaholic 07-16-2006 10:06 PM

I just thought TREX was a great cam when I had it, and if my car went NA again then it would be TREX again

I like my big cam too...

243*-247*-112*-.629"-.629"

small cams are boring for me ;)

If I were in your position I would get the TSP package with the PRC .650" lift springs and a MS4... but hey... that's just me....

I also do my own installs... so that saves cash too....

sidewayz28 07-17-2006 01:37 AM

i wish i could go that big...but unfortunately thats not the case

no to hijack your thread!! but i cant see anybody trying to hook up at a stop light in a 4 way intersection with a huge 230ish/230ish duration cam!! for me thats where most of my races would be. at a light or on a freeway.

a 230/230 is NOT a huge cam.....

indeed, might as well leave it stock :jest:

both of those cams will be decent performers and the 918 springs are more than capable of handling .600 lift for quite a while,or so i've heard.as the big boys have allready suggested, get it on a 112 or 110.with a good tune you will be happy :)

sidewayz28 07-17-2006 01:18 PM

am i going to need new injectors or will the stockers work fine for a bit? i know im for sure chaninging spark plugs and wires.

sidewayz28 07-17-2006 02:06 PM

alright well its final..called tsp ordered the cam package deal with the 918 springs..
they no longer have the "231/237" cams because they are now the torquer v.2 232/234 .595/.598. i also ordered it on a 113 lsa. so everything out the door; camshaft package, ls2 timing chain, new GM gaskets etc. was like $630 shipped! all i can say is im pretty damn pumped!

Not sure but I heard you may have to flycut with that cam...

sidewayz28 07-17-2006 02:33 PM

well im hoping thats not the case..because i asked a lot of questions at TSP and he mentioned nothing of flycutting..

sidewayz28 07-17-2006 03:23 PM

Brian@ TSP says "no" no flycutting will be necessary!! :) thanks for scaring me viewsonic!

lol, sorry... but it is better to be scared than to be sorry.

Even though you confirmed no flycutting is required still check....

Turn the motor over by hand before firing it up....
