Default Block strength

How strong is the stock ls1 bare block with aftermarket rotating assembly? How much power will it take?

Don't know about the iron blocks, but the the aluminum blocks are good to about 850hp. You can make more power than that on them, but it becomes an upill battle against cylinder wall distortion and HG sealing. As more boost is put to them, they return less and less power. At around 1500+ hp, even the C5R blocks break regularly. But to give an idea, one of our customers picked up over 500hp when they switched to our billet aluminum LS1 block with no other changes to the setup. The engine made 200 more hp, 1000rpm earlier than with the previous block. Over 2000hp peak. The only difference was a more rigid block. They were losing that much power just from cylinder wall distortion! It's not just the LS blocks either. Oddly enough, the ford modular and the latest gen viper V10 all start having problems north of 850hp. We will be making a billet viper block here soon, too.

Just to make sure we're all on the same page in this thread.Would posters please mention whether they are citing numbers taken at the wheel or crank when they make reference.
I know it's not going to be very scientific unless testing procedures and dynamometers used are noted as well but those differences are usually fairly small whereas the difference between crank and wheel HP are generally large.

In my first post I was referring to numbers at the crank.

Prodrive that's very interesting information you present in your post! 500hp from a block switch is nothing short of *amazing*. A gain that large would lead me to believe that the original black was in terrible shape at those power levels.

Being billet I'd assume there are no cooling provisions in block?

Parish has got to be in the 1,500hp at the crank range in his regularly street driven truck. He's using an FE block.

It's more expensive than a C5R block, but it also comes fully machined and ready to run. The C5R needs additional machine work. Unfortunately, I can't give out prices since LSM is not a sponsor yet. You would have to call or PM for more info on the block. When you consider the life expectancy of a C5R and a billet block at 1500+hp, I believe our billet blocks are very competitive.

Numbers quoted above were at the crank btw.

Here's a link with pics of the block. Our billet block has been discussed here before.
