I brought my car to a chevy dealer to have my oil changed (I would do it myself but they dont let us at our complex, and I dont have time ) and they said around my oil cap was peanut buttered colored and said I might have a leak on one of my gaskets so that water or coolant is getting into my oil but when I checked it out 2 days ago it was not peanut butter colored on the dip stick. They also told me it could just be moister build up around the cap. Just curious if this is a common problem.

and while im here,,, I know this isnt an internal engine question but when i arm my car with the stock alarm after about 5 seconds my alarm will go off. Nothing touches or bumps my car or anything. is this a common problem?

I recommend having someone who knows these cars do it next time. The condensation and peanut butter looking stuff on the oil cap are normal. Generally an indication that the car is not driven enough or taken for long enough drives to heat the oil and burn off the condensation.

 

I didnt think they knew what they were talking about because they looked like young guys and they said they almost never get any camaro z28's, ss, ws6 etc...in. Probably because people with these cars take them to places where the people know what they are talking about. I will do the same from know on. Hey!! but they knew how to change the oil!!

Its normal, if you check your radiator I bet there is no oil residue in it. Also, I am guessing after a day of setting there is no milky on the dip-stick. Again, I bet you drive it on lots of SHORT trips. Take her on the highway for 45 minutes once a week...does wonders!

 

no theres none at all. Plus my coolant is at normal level they didnt even need to add anything. Oh and it seems one of my sensors were bad for my alarm. I disconnected the one in the hatch on the passenger side and the problem went away.

 

lets say for the sake of argument that there is coolant and/or water getting in my oil. How would it be getting in there. Is it a gasket or somehting more serious like a crack in the block? Sorry im just paranoid now

 

also when I checked my coolant stick it had pastey resadue all over it

 

pastey **** is normal when it has gms "long life" but if u havnt chamged it yet, do a flush. and just bc coolent is in the oil doesnt mean oil is in the coolent or vice versa

 

thanx i feal a little better. Im gonna get a compresion test tomorrow just to make sure theres no leaks anywhere.

 

if the coolant was getting into your oil you would have big problems you would know about. I beleive you would have bajor valvetrain noise.

 

no there no noise at all and my oil pressure is alway above a half when Im driving.

 

dont waste your money

put some radiator stop leak into the radiator. my car would eat coolant and would have lots of condensation on the cap. i put stop leak in there and it quit. fyi stop leak is put in there from the factory, so no its not going to hurt anything.

 

I work 0.8 miles form work and I dont take it on long trips which is probebly why im getting this problem. Just to make sure you know what cap im talking about. Its the coolant cap with the plastic stick on it. It has pastie crap all over it but my engine runs fine and sounds great. I worry to much about problems i guess because I have had 2 camaro's (in the 80's) in the past and had nothing but problems. one even seized. I also used to have a 97 camaro rs with the body kit but didnt have it long enough to have problems. Am I worring to much that I have a serious problem or this is normal and shouldnt waste money on a diag and compression test?

oh BTW.. when I bought my car I had the police interceptor badge on it but i thought somebody just put it there so I took it off. Is it possible I have the PI package? I called slp but forgot to ask. I did find out my car was #40 though.

 

another thing my car isnt eating coolant it just has pastey **** around the coolant cap and oil cap.

 

your car isnt a B4C. no SSs were. i just added the badge myself.

 

If you live that close to your work, it's the short trips that are doing it. ya need to drive around for a good hour or so at least once a week to evap all the ater out that's getting in there.. shoudl solve the problem.

FWIW, when I was living very close to my work at a previous job/residence, I had the same thign happening in my pickup.. I moved, ride to work went form about 8 min on average to a 1/2 hour, and that was gone at the next oil change, and never came back
