Default Bigger cam for auto-x

Anybody do any auto-x with a bigger cam. I am thinking in the range of ms3, ms4, torquer v2, thunder 230/236 112lsa. Just curious what you think about it and if the down low power is very important.

does the cam affect downlow power for autox and if so, do you even stay that low for auto-x?

Thanks, I am planning to do just a little bit of auto-x this year so i was curious. I realize camming the car may put me in a different class but that's ok with me.

i think that you're going to want a cam with more low end grunt than the ms3, ms4. i have a friend that auto-x's with the torquer cam. if you're interested, PM me and i'll give you his s/n here on tech, i'm sure he'd be glad to help you.

What's up Dickens.
I've been running autox's with a torquer v2 112lsa for a few months now, and I can tell you that your car will be a handfull. It all comes down to how serious you are at any one type of racing. I love autocrossing, but I'll be the first to admit that the last few mods I done hurt rather than helped (12 bolt, cam, and heads).

If you are going to autocross occasionaly, go for whatever cam you want. The bigger cams lose some of the low RPM torque but it doesn't really hinder you. To be honest, I like it better because I don't have to be as easy with the go pedal coming out of a slow tight turn. However, mid-range to high rpms can be tricky if your accelerating out of a turn and are not careful with the gas. I've spun out more than once this year because of that and while you won't win that way you will become a crowd favorite as far as spectators go.

How are the courses where you run? We are fortunate with our club to have a few airport runways to play on, and that tends to lead to very few slow parts. However if you mainly use smaller parking lots the torque loss might be more apparent. This could be the biggest point if you going to base your decision on autocrossing. Also, if you don't have them already, your going to want some gears when you get the cam. Ive had 4.10's since I put the six speed in my car and can't imagine having anything else (even without a cam).

It'll change your class, but unless your going nationals who cares anyway. I run SM now, and have a good bunch to compete with (currently 1st in points with one race left). You should know that in this class it's an uphill battle. I think out of F-stock, our cars get murdered.

Anyway, hope that clears up some things for you and if you've got any more questions fire them off.

I'm not an auto crosser like the poster above, but I agree. If you are racing on tight tracks with slow corners, you really wouldn't want a 230+ cam. I'd talks to one of the sponsors about a custom grind. Something like 222/228 XE-R lobes, 110 +2 would make excellent torque coming off the corners, and still carry the power up higher in the rev range. Should work well with Comp 918 springs too.

Auto X is not about power but rather balance. Look at the Porsche Cayman S and BMW M3. These cars have 27? hp and 333 hp respectively and they are monsters on the course. Work with your suspension and brakes first. And the best one of them all: Seat time.
