can't get damper off!! Testing my temper! Ok, I have a 3 arm puller but that damn thing is tightas hell. First of all do the puller arms hook on the three tabs that is near the center of the damper or should I be pulling on the back side of the damper? Are they always a bitch to get off? |
i just put mine on the 3 tabs from the center and it came right off |
they hook on the 3 tabs. i use a "chrysler balancer puller" but I use a longer bolt out of one of my other pullers. This works very well. You can get a "loan a tool" from autozone. good luck |
You can pull from either area, and yes the stock crank can be a pain in the ass if it's been on there a while. |
I read that you can use a little handheld torch to warm up the damper a little to help it come off. Do you think that will hurt anything? I was thinking about having pressure on it from the puller and putting a little heat to the center of the damper. |
Some people put some heat on it if they really can't get it off but be careful not to heat it too much as you could warp the crank. |

Has anyone done that yet? Be sure and replace the crank seal if you do use some heat to help get it off. It may leak if you dont. |
Yup it's a b*tch. Use as big a wrench as you can and just keep cranking. Everytime I remove the rack and work with the pulley I swear it's the last time. Somehow it never is :P |

As wierd as it sounds, go to your local autozone or Hi-Lo and rent their Chrysler crank pulley puller. It works great on the LS1..... |
Mine was never that bad...I just got the puller and crank at it. A good breaker bar works wonders. Getting it off is a bitch though. |
dont heat it up cause your gonna burn yourself when it falls |
Mine was a real bitch to get off. I used the puller and a 1/2 inch dr. breaker bar plus a cheater bar that was about 4 ft. long. |
Charlie is absolutely correct. Get you a Chrysler puller from Autozone and use a longer bolt. Works like a champ. Good luck!! |
myvette97, Try greasing the threads of the puller and put some grease on the end of the puller bolt where it rotates against the crank snout. Another thing to try is spraying some WD-40 around the crank snout (front and back of the pulley) about three times (once every hour or so for three hours). Maybe the penetrating action as well as the lubricating action will help. I've had my pulley off three times. The first time it was really hard to break loose . . . took me about four to six hours. The next two times, it was a breeze. I'll be doing it again within the year once I get my 408 built. The first time is the hardest. All my best, Steve |
Did you get it off yet???? |
I didn't see what tranny you had...if it's an A4 you can always lock the flywheel |
