Default Preloading Lifters?

Okay, a lot of folks will probably laugh a bit at my wimpy heads / cam upgrade I am doing since I am going from stock OEM to only a 224/224 581 Comp cam and matching heads from MTI in Houston but, that's all I really wanted to try for now.

My question - I decided to replace the hydraulic lifters since my engine has 83,000 miles on it (I have also repalced oil pump, water pump, rokcer arms, sensors, seals/gaskets, Rollmaster double chain, etc). I have been reading where you need to preload the lifters or they may fail. I have never preloaded a lifter before. I thought all you had to do was soak the lifters in oil for about 2 days, replace the lifters and install the plastic cups in the heads and you were good to go. What does preloading do?

Apprecaite your time and help.

Good street cam and with thr right compression capable of 450+rwhp on the right combo.

Replace them with either NEW OEM units from Cadillac program, or Comp 850-16

Preload is affected by length of p-rod in non adjustable stock rocker system, so you need to know how much was milled in the heads (you prolly guetting 2E heads), and also what will be your compressed gasket thickness.

Clean them well, then soak them for a few hours max, you don't need to pre-load them with oil, in fact you don't want to. Just make sure the oil fully penetrates the bearings.
