Spring height question?
#2
Spring installed height on a stock LS1 head is 1.910-1.950. Thats why I always shim when I do cam installs. Spring pressures are always gonna be completely off if not properly shimed.
I have always wondered if other shops are just slapping the springs on there during cam installs or are they checking????

I don't have my stockers measured yet, but I removed a set of Crane springs and with the Crane retainer and Crane seat I got 1.765 +/- 0.005" of installed height.
Not sure how stock can be 1.910, that's 0.150" more than the Cranes and although the Crane setup has a slightly thicker seat those numbers appear too high.

I would recheck your 1.765 measurement. Pending on what Crane's recommendation of spring installed height you could be close to coil bind height, because most spring companys are wanting their spring height at 1.800. You are prolly fine because spring companys usually give you plenty of room for error. My 1.910-1.950 was a misprint, sorry it was late and I was just leaving the shop, supposed to be 1.810-1.850. Ya 1.950 would be a ton of shimmage, lol. Thats why I usually put a .020-.050 shim on cam installs, its worth 10-15 pounds of seat pressure and 20-40 open. To be even more exact I just went and measured a Comp 918 spring to see the exact differences. At 1.835 (spliting the difference) seat pressure dropped 20 pounds to 110. Open at 1.235 it dropped 35 pounds to 285.
For you guys enjoyment I went and put .150 shim on there to just see what that would look like and you cant even put the valve stem seal all the way down.
