Default Double Spring installation (pics within)

well...after breaking another 941 valvespring not that long ago...I decided to bite the bullet and put double springs in the car. Unfortunately this required taking the heads off the car...decided to open up a BIG can of worms :

So, I pull the heads off and this is the first thing I see

That eyebrow thing on top of the piston...well...that is where the #1 intake valve decided to smack the piston when that spring broke a few months ago at the track during a burnout Not good

so I keep on tearing it apart until it looks like this

what a freaking mess

So what did I have done to the heads you might ask (while they were off the car):

1) double springs (ISKY doubles on the left, Comp 941s on the right, can't you see the difference) ...

2) valvejob and some milling for straightness:

after finally finishing the install (what a job) I take her out and romp on it a bit....my first impression:

all I can say is DO NOT HIT THE GAS TOO HARD IN FIRST LOL

it pulls like a raped ape again. After some track testing...It appears I picked up 3-4 mph from the rebuilt heads...my old ones must've been in SUPER TIRED shape

Fireball:
What are the part numbers and specs for the Isky double springs you used.
Did you use titanium retainers or differnt spring locators? If so part#'s?

Thanks
Eric

Was the valve that smacked the piston bent?

Cool pictures. When I got my heads from ARE, it was pretty amazing to see the difference in spring size

it smacked pretty hard...not sure if it was bent or not

What I got was the MTI double package...I forgot all the part numbers they used It had retainers, locators, seals and ISKY springs.

I had a pretty good conversation with someone I'd consider "a very reliable source" yesterday. We discussed new valvesprings to go along with my upcoming cam change, and the new Comp 918 ovate wire springs were recommended, along with the new Comp Ti retainers for these springs.

The ovate wire/beehive shape design brings some interesting "theory" to the table, and I'm going to give them a shot on my car. They are stock diameter springs, so no machining is needed. They are very lightweight, so spring pressure doesn't have to be as great to control the valvetrain. I was told they'd be no problem with my new cam (not giving away any details yet) up to 7500rpm (notthat I'll spin it that high).

Am I 100% sure they'll be trouble free and work great in my car? Not yet, but they're worth giving a try...

What cam were you using when you broke your springs? What lift?
