Default Thinking about going heads/cam

I'm thinking about going heads/cam, and getting some LT headers, and possibily putting my 100 shot back on the car. My question is, if I do this, I drive this car just about everyday. How will reliability be and gas mileage. I know i'm not gonna get awesome gas mileage but i'm just curious. What about tuning, is there much to be said about that? Thanks guys.

I'm by no means an expert on tuning, but after I finished my head/cam install, I took it for a test drive before and after loading the programming. The difference was night and day. Before the programming, I was getting the feeling I had wasted alot of cash

Is your car an A4 or M6? As far as gas mileage it may worsen but it won't be that much worse at all. If you go through with it, your car would be a lot faster. As far as cam selection it all depends on what you want, if your car is an A4 i would recommend a B1, if it is an M6 i would recommend a hotcam or a T1.

The car is a M6. When you say "tuning" what are you talking about exactly, I'm a dumbass when it comes to tuning. Are you talking about just the Superchips program or what?

Yea, ARE sends SuperChips a spec sheet of the car, which includes your other mods, gear ratio, etc., and they program it in the MicroTuner. Just plug it in your car, and download the program to the PCM.

The tuning issue is what’s kept me away from going with some big NA power for a while now. As an A4 owner, I’m worried about all the “extra” BS that us A4 guys have to go through when it comes to tuning and heads/cam setups in A4s. Stuff like bad MAP readings causing low line pressure, misfire causing lock/unlock problems, torque management, etc. I know all this can be programmed out, but I wish I didn’t have to send my computer out.

I think I’ll buy a Yank tranny before I do any heads cam though.

I think there is something to be said for a moderate set-up versus an all-out set-up. The last 5% can often compromise streetability. My new set-up is strugling and needs tuning, but on my previous cam (a 218/218 114) the stock tuning with a higher idle seemed to work well.

Well you heard my car idling at Steele, right?

And you saw my times, right?

My car is absolutely dead solid daily driveable, idles nicely, clutch feels like stock, and gets 23.x mpg on the highway.

H/C is the way to go! Oh yeah and some spray too!

Do you still have to tune if you do MTI stage 2 heads with the T1? I ask becuase I heard on tuning was necessary for T1 cams.
