ls1 347 vs 5.3L ?
I have my ls1 from my TA sitting in my garage and it has me thinking. I want to start modding my truck which is a 01 Silverado with a 5.3L and I was thinking of swapping out the 5.3L for the Ls1. I daily drive my truck and pull with from time to time so I am going to go with a smaller cam like a tr220 and a small stall close to 3000. My question is how much more power will the ls1 make compared to the 5.3L assuming that they will have the same supporting mods. I plan on getting headers and a cutout but I am going to leave the intake and tb stock. I already have stage 2 heads sitting on my ls1 but if I stick with the 5.3L I will sell them and buy stage 2 5.3L heads. What do you guys think? Is it worth going through the trouble of swapping out the short block? I would be doing the swap myself by the way.

not neccessilarly. do you have the LM7 or the L33 in your truck? if you have the L33 your have 310 rated hp. whth some bolt ons you can have more power than the LS1 can provide. however if you have the LM7 you have 285 hp. the basic difference between an LM7 and an L33 is the block which is almuminm on the L33 and iron on the LM7. the L33 has higher comp. ratio for more power. if you have the L33 in stock form and your LS1 is in stock form, the LS1 will make about 40 more HP than the L33. if you have the LM7 the LS1 may be a better idea. but for the money, i would just cam your L33 and sell the LS1 for money to buy parts.
edit: now that i have re read your post, the only way i would swap out the short block is if you have the iron block LM7. other than that i would put the stage 2 5.3 heads and the other stuff you have including cam and call it a day. its all gen III engine stuff so it will all coexist.

I do have the LM7 engine that is rated at 285. I didn't even think about the weight difference with these two motors. Anybody have an idea what the weight difference is between the Ls1 and the Lm7?

What about the LM4? Any info on it. It just looking for 350-400hp. I can get an LM4 for cheap ($400) but can also get a LQ9 for $1200. Just wondering which one will make the power I want for the cheapest price. I already have an LS2 cam, LS2 rods, and LS6 springs. I will probably go with an LS1 or LS2 intake, fuel rail, and injectors....unless someone knows of a better manifold to use (other than the LS6...to much $).

Wow, talk about a thread revival!
I have an 01 Silverado with the LM7 5.3 as well. About 207k miles and still chugging along with no complaints .
When it gives up, I plan on going with something like this:

and topping it off with some 243 heads and a LS6 cam or similar.

Wow 7 year old thread. I decided not to go with a ls1. My truck now has a forged 370 with a pt7675 making north of 750rwhp. Forced induction is the only way to go on these heavy trucks.
