Default Why install a cam + or - a few degrees?

When installing a cam what is the reason for installing it a few degrees this way or that way? I know that to do this we would have to also install a LS1 Hi-Tech Race Roller Adjustable Timing set. So can anyone explain what is the reason to install the cam + or - degree or two? Also what makes you determine how many degrees out?

It moves the powerband. I know that.

Now I think that if you need to retard it more than 2 degrees your cam is too big, and if you need to advance it more than 2 degrees its too small. But it might be the other way around...

It's the other way around. Advancing the cam tends to bring the RPM range down and retarding does the opposite.

Ok, I wasn't too sure about that.

Do you agree with the part about 2 degrees? More or less? Is your new cam dot to dot?

Are far as I know it is a dot to dot but to be honest I'm not sure. I bought it from www.thunderracing.com ;-) it is a Lunati 221/224 .558 .560 @ 114 Part #55099 It does not say anything about setting it up + or - any degrees. I was reading a bag issue of Super Chevy from about Feb.-2000 the whole mag is about cams. In there was an article about setting up cams and I read it there. Just wanted to know more and if I would need to do it also.
