Default High rpm stumble...

It started after a weekend of traveling and 1/4 mile racing in Bristol. I had a small backfire between shifts. I was a little paranoid because I missed a gear (just didn't make it into third) and I bounced off the revlimiter hard many times.

Then today I had a bad stumble at 5500 - 6200 rpms. There was a considerable power loss and a light poping sound from the exhaust.

I had already ordered 8 pushrods because I had planned to pull them and check them. However, I remember several people from old days past, CrkHeadMatt stands out the most, that their plug wires were bad. So I got a box of Accell plug wires too.

I replaced the plug wires and now my car pulls stronger than before. I was running Magnecore wires (with about 15,000 miles on them, but not anymore.

While pulling them out, we pulled off three of the ends. <img src="images/icons/shocked.gif" border="0">

Lesson here? You might not have bent pushrods so check your plug wires before you get all excited. Check the simple stuff first.

Just a friendly reminder.

Yep, that's a good reminder....bad plugs or wires can cause a lot of headaches before you figure it out.

Thanks for the advice Eric! I had a similar thing happen to my 98 Formula, one day all of a sudden it just got this real bad high rpm stumble, so bad that I thought the fuel pump was toast. Before I was going to take it to the dealer though, I figured I'd try changing the plugs, even though a quick pull of one of them appeared as if they were ok. But I still changed them anyways, they were TR6s with 13k on them, and apparently even though they appeared fine, they were toasted, since when I changed them the hesitation totally disappeared.

So it's often the little things that can cause problems that seem like they might be bigger.

I would test everything, plugs, wires, & coils.

7 year old thread revival, holy crap! Don't forget other simple things such as fuel filters and clogged injectors too. Good luck!
