Default How does a split duration cam work?

I am wondering exactly what a split cam is and how it works resulting in power. I was thinking about this on the way to work. I think there are people here that could explain this to me..

I’m taking a guess (hopefully the logical guess here). Split duration would have 2 different amounts of duration, Intake versus Exhaust? One being slightly longer.. Which has the longer duration? Or does it depend on the cam? How would this result in better performance?

Also what are the advantages and disadvantages of a split cam?

Thanks for helping me fill my head full of knowledge.

You are right about having different durations on intake vs. exhaust. Usually the exhaust side has more duration than the intake which helps get the burnt fumes out of the combustion chamber faster, which results in more power.

More exhaust duration will work well with n2o applications.

TA,
Thanks for the link.. I knew cams are dependant on a lot of other things like head flow, converter, bla bla. Still good link..
