Default Stock heads with a 408???

I searched and couldn't come up with any answers.

I am putting together a motor for my new project. In my currrent car I hve a stock short block with AFR205's and a 224/224 114 and it is a verynice setup. For this car I want more.

I am most intersted in low and midrange power, top end and peak numbers are not all that important to me. I am much more interested in driveability.

The question is can I use a set of stock heads on a 408 and what would be the smallest cam I can use. This will be a M6 car.

I am hesitant to get heads to keep the costs down, at least initially.

Thanks for any info.

a good set of heads will probably pick you up power everywhere with a stroker motor. some people have used the stockers on a few 408s and been in the 46x to 47x range in rwhp but i can't remember the tq.those afr 205s in a 408 with something in the 22x/23x range would be a tq monster.

The 460 range would be generous, the 243 or 317 castings are going to help substancially (in stock form) over 241s. You are probably going to have a difference of 50-60whp+ in ported heads or aftermarket vs. stock. Do it right and put some heads on there.

Based strictly on airflow, if you are putting heads that are designed to feed a 346ci engine up to 6000 rpm on a 408ci engine, you shouldn't expect it to perform very well after 5000 rpm. Proper valve events would enhance that somewhat.

It should work if you are dead set on a lower rpm range, but you'll probably gain power everywhere with a decent set of ported 243 or 317 heads.
