What to check for when inspecting oil pump?
I am going to be doing a cam swap soon and wanted to know whats up with the stock oil pumps. I thought that I read somewhere that the inlet may have some casting flash on it and to just hone it out. I also read about there being some problems with the relieve spring getting stuck open. I'm not going to spend the money to buy a new pump, just wanted to check my stock one. Thanks.

Yup. I was sure I had an oil pump issue this past summer when I spun a rod bearing. When the engine was torn down, there was evidence of oil starvation, (main bearings were scored pretty bar too) but there was no way of proving that the pressure relief valve had stuck open when the oil pump was examined. The fact is, that the stock pump is a real POS. In the long run, it might be a wise investment to upgrade the oil pump. I put in the ARE ported oil pump I feel very secure now because whenever I look down at the oil pressure gauge, it's wa-y-y up there! IMHO, it is entirely possible to spend money on more foolish things! {:-)Good luck!

I personally think it is all a bunch of hype to get you to pay $150 for a $30 pump when doing engine upgrades. I run a 150/1000th's shim on the bypass spring to increase oil pressure (around 80 psi with cool oil). It really helps at high rpm and high temps. Otherwise, just look for obvious defects and put it back together. Make sure you torque everthing correctly, as the aluminum is easy to damage.

Exactly what I was thinking! Just wasn't sure what they were changing.

Maybe the few hundred folks with failed oil pumps could speak up. It is not some gag to get you to spend money. <img src="images/icons/blush.gif" border="0">

Then again your average enthusiast might one to buy one that they wont' mess up, oil pump is pretty darn important. But if I knew what I was doing I might have tried it (on someone else's car).

I gotta tell you a funny oil pump story - this happened to one of our Toronto F-body club guys this summer, a few weeks after he took delivery of his new '01 WS6. He started it up one morning and immediately noticed 0 oil pressure. He shut it down right away and had it flatbedded to the nearest GM dealer. (largest volume dealer in the country) To make a long story short, the kept his car 10 days, they did replace the oil pump under warranty, and believe it or not (and I have personally seen the paperwork!), the dealer billed GM CDN$5400 for the whole job!!!
