Default Holley air filter shows a gain?

I went racing yesterday, and already had my brand new Holley air filter installed in the car. My car was a little off due to traction issues and the weather, so I decided to take out the filter to make up some ground since I was qualifying for a heads up class, and wanted all the uumph I could find.

My car has always shown gains of .03-.07 seconds when running w/o the air filter. Yesterday, however, I lost ~.5mph when I removed the filter. It magically came back when I reinstalled the filter. I didn't have enough time to do any "extensive" with/without testing, but it looks like the Holley is a pretty decent piece.

I couldn't really make an ET comparison since my 60's were .1 sec off most of the day...

Just found it somewhat interesting...

George,

It wouldn't surprise me that a properly designed low restriction air filter might pick up some power over no filter. The filter helps to straighten out the turbulence in the incoming airflow. Getting rid of the turbulence helps to reduce drag in the intake tract as well as allow your MAF to be more accurate.

In the past, I noticed absolutely no difference in ET or mph in my car from running a paper filter or no filter at all. So I concluded that the extra turbulence from running no filter actually offset the pressure recovery from getting rid of the paper filter's pressure drop. I now too run a Holley filter and think that it is indeed an improvement over a paper filter or no filter.

Didn't GM High Tech just dyno test a Holley filter and gained like .8 HP or something?

Maybe it was more than that but not much. I was a bit suprised.

I've heard some lids flow better with a filter in them, not sure why though. I'm looking forward to seeing your results.

The surprising thing is that I've borrowed a friend's K&N, and it actually slowed the car down vs. no filter at all.

I think the Holley will stay in the car from now on, after I verify the results of some true back-to-back testing.
