Default Best Way to Clean Heads/Tuning Question???

I just bought a pair of used MTI stage II heads with 1,000 miles on them from a fellow board member. I was wondering what the absolute best way to clean these heads would be..(do's and dont's)? Please let me know, I will be having them installed within the next week or two so Id like to have them ready to go (they are currently lightly coated in oil by the previous owner). Thanks for the help.

brake clean to get rid of oil, acetone and a plastic sponge to get rid of gasket material.

This stuff can dry out your seals so either be ready to replace them, or be very careful how you use them.

Best way? Bead blast them with glass beads inside and out. Then you'll need to rinse them in acid ("aluminum brightner") to get all of the sand out of the heads. After that, hit the intake gasket surface with a scotchbrite pad and deck them. Don't forget touching up and blending in your valve job too.

Or you could just take the springs out and wash them with degreaser and hot water. Blow dry with compressed air and reassemble.

Also, my car is already tuned for my cam/bolt-on set up, how soon do I have to get my car tuned after I get these heads installed? This is my daily driver, so it may be hard to get it all done at once???? Let me know what you think.

if you have the money get it tuned asap.. your a/f is going to change again and the last thing you want is to go lean and blow something.. specially it its a daily driver then for sure i would tune it quick.

Let a good head shop clean and check them out.

I'd say disassemble them completely and wash them with a good sponge and some degreaser. They don't need to by too clean, they will be black with soot after 10 seconds anyways. You mainly want to remove all of the old gasket material.

I am going to take them to a head shop just for them to get looked over. There is no head gasket material on the heads, the previous owner cleaned them up and coated them with oil. I just need to clean off the oil so I can get them on the car. Thanks for the advice everyone.

A clean-up mill still isn't a good idea. They could be clean, but not perfectly flat. If you're running a MLS gasket, they would probably be fine to put on how they are just cleaned up well.

If your in a hurry/need them on go with carb cleaner. If you have a little cash and some time, take it to a machine shop and have them cleaned and gone through.
