Thermostat change/Fan relay Okay, I'm sure a few people have done this. <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0"> I figure this is the next cheap step to a little more hp since the car runs about 210 now (mods in sig are all that's done to car, everything else is BONE stock). I'm thinking about a 160 stat and maybe a fan relay to crank the fans on earlier.
My questions are:
1-what kind of horsepower gains can be accomplished, and does it affect mileage/driveability?? Any #s people have for before/after these mods? I'm thinking the motor would not operate as efficently(spelling??) at a lower temp for mpg. I figure horsepower is better at a lower temp off my carb tuning days, but what's optimal??
2-advice on whether to do the fan relay as a buy and plug in (slp for example) or do it with a shadetree approach?
I'm trying to do minimal cut-up work to this car as it is my daily driver. That way I can always put it back to stock. My nova gets the hack stuff, b/c I can always buy a new panel for that. <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> I just want to do future mods to the formula off other members experiences.

Re: Thermostat change/Fan relay HP gains may be non existant.BUT, in a situation where you need to cool the motor down, thermo and early fan turn on can help hp being robbed by heat,and maybe help out your A4.
I have the HPP3 to turn my fans on early.
I also have a manual fan switch I wired in.
You can buy a switch from SLP to give you manual capability, or do like I did and wire one up yourself. Hint: the pcm turns the fans on by putting the signal wires to the relays to ground.
