Default FTRA VS New Competition

Just curious if anyone remembers a thread over on the "other" site regarding a potential new ram air system that did not increase running temps. I'm sure Preddy does? <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0"> Preddy is a great guy and its seems FTRA is a great product but more choices can't hurt any input? Also, do you folks with FTRA run a 160 stat with HPP3 or what? PS I've got a 99' Z so I'm not sure what temp stat I have. TIA

Unfortunitly, I don't know where you live... But, when I first install the Whisper Ram-Air (exactly like the FTRA) I was in Florida in August (<--very hot).

I had stock thermostat, and the temparture was around 100 degree's during the day. I never had any trouble. The car was a 99 SS with basic bolt-on's including MAF ends. The temp before and after shown on autotap was only 10 degree's difference.

The FTRA does block the radiator, but no enough to matter on most cars. If you live in a hot area... run the lower plate during "cooler" months, and take it off during the summer.

I had the temp climb over 210 on the guage before. It started freaking me out! I estimate it had to be 240ish. I have a scanmaster now, and see 220 easily in cool/cold weather. Cooling system is totally stock. I need a better alternative, that doesn;t make the car so hot.

No overheating problems with mine and i kept the lower plate in during the summer. I had a 180 T-stat with it.

What was the potential new ram air setup? I don't remember anything like that.

I run stock t-stat and programming. No problems.

If you were worried about cooling, you would have gotten a hpp3/lower t-stat no matter what. It's not going to make a huge difference or something. 5-10 degrees or something. If that's enough to worry you, like I said - you would have already done cooling mods.

I've had my FTRA since March and while sitting at a light using ATAP I have seen temps. rise to as much as 227* in the summer with the lower plate on. I use the stock t-stat and no programming. I should probably take off the sheild or change the t-stat a little lower than stock but I am just too lazy to get under the car all the time to take it off and put it back on. Plus I don't know if it is just my car but the lower plate is a bitch to get the airdam screws lined up with.

The 2nd fan with stock programming doesn't even come on until 220ish which is why everyone sees this temp. This is normal and how Chevy designed to car to run. Once the 2nd fan engages, the temp drops down quickly. You can achieve the same effect with aftermarket programming or a fan switch.

I have never actually heard of a car overheating with the FTRA installed. A few people said they came close in EXTREMELY hot conditions but at the same time, it is difficult to say what would have happened under the same circumstances even without the FTRA.

I always read these threads with great interest.

I have two lower airboxs, one is a regular one with !FRA.

I recently looked at the FTRA on a car. Colonel says it's absolutely worth it.

What lower plate are you folks talking about?

What if I unseal the airbox for driving around on non-racedays, will it run cooler?
