Cam install question Well I am soon going to bite the bullet and do a cam install on my 98 M6 Z28. I have researched this subject to death and looked over all the install documents at tourqecentral.com.
I feel pretty confident that I can pull off the install without much of a problem. But I have one thing I want to ask all you experts. How do I adjust the valves after thi install? Spring height, and lifter preload. I'm not exactly sure what effect these have on the final assembly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
BTW I will most likely be going with the Thunder 224/224 cam, and whatever springs, pushrods and retainers that Thunder Racing recommends. They have always been great to deal with.

Re: Cam install question Most of the springs you will just need to drop them in. No adjustments. That is what I did, and that is what most people do. If you want to do it "the right way" , to attain a specific spring height, you would need to get shims and a micrometer to measure the spring height.
You really don't need to do all that though, just throw them in there. That is what I did, on two sets of springs, 941's and K-motions 750's. I broke two 941's, but have yet to break a K-motion.

Re: Cam install question No need to adjust the valves on the LS1. Just torque the rockers down to 22lb-ft. What I normally do is torque them down to 20lb-ft and then rotate the motor over a few times with the starter or the crank bolt and then go back and torque them to 22lb-ft.

Re: Cam install question 1) your spring height should be ok if you use the 918 springs. Just throw em in and go from what I hear.
2) lifter preload will be ok as long as your new cam's basecircle is close to your stock cams basecircle. Its almost certain your basecircles are within the tolerances your lifters can handle so I wouldnt worry about it.
As an example, I recently went from a low'ish lift cam to a high lift cam, and since the basecircle on the high lift cam was smaller, I ended up having to put in longer pushrods (since our rockers are non-adjustible) to make up for it.
