Is there a real power difference with cutout location?

just wondering since i have a "zed sytle" cutout in the rear right behind the muffler. i have a hot cammed dynatech header car with usual boltons. would i gain anything a cutout right off the y-pipe? i think my muffler shop (still a decent job) y-pipe is a restriction with it being a 2.5" non-mandrel bent y-pipe. if it did not make much of a difference, then i dont care. also, would it sound much louder with the sound coming out the bottom of the car?
thanks for your opinions.

I have a cutout next to the muffler in the rear and don't see really any gains. Most that are happy with their cutouts have it before the pipe goes over the rear axle. It is deffinately louder there too and you will hear it a lot more in the cabin depending how it is done. I have heard of them being "turned down" to cut down on a lot of noise. I may move mine later. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[Burnout]" />
Further up the I-pipe is better, and properly spaced dual cutouts on the Y-pipe would be even better.
Zed location helps the most with a stock exhaust or SS muffler.

I have just bolt-ons with a B&B TriFlow. One day a friend and I were running around the track at Watkins, and he said my car wasn't loud enough. So I did a ZED cutout just before the muffler with an detachable 3" extension out the back and a cap for the street. It's louder now, but relatively quiet in the car. When the car idles, a significant amount of exhaust still flows out through the muffler. I would guess that a regular cutout further forward would flow much better.

I actually know someone who has try all three cutout locations. He saw more HP from the one postitioned just before the axle. His car lost HP putting two cut-out in the Y-pipe. It was a bolt-on car.

Here is some more info on the Y-Pipe cutouts. Brooke had a H&C car.

well this really does help with my dilema. i think i do want to do dual cutouts on the y-pipe, but it seems like there would be a ground clearance problem. maybe not.
so i should put cutouts on both sides off of the collectors? if you guys think i will gain some power than i will do it. also, how much of a pain in the *** is it to cap and uncap? my car is lowered 1.5"! i really want the sound of open headers "sometimes" again. then there are times i would just like the quiet catback. thanks

Makes sense. I'd think the location immediatly after the y-pipe would make the most power.

I think a foot back should work. You probably need some space for the flow to straighten itself out. The I-pipe diameter may be a factor too (2.5" stock v. 3" catback).
