Default If You Upgraded From Mac Headers...

I am thinking of redoing my exhaust. Even with the Dynomax bullets in the Y-Pipe and an SLP dual dual, I'm tired of the Mac rasp at 2000 - 2200 rpm and would like to quiet my car down a bit and gain a little more HP too.

Tell me what headers you now run and how they sound relative to the Macs. Any info on the newer and less expensive (e.g. hookers, dynatech) headers would be appreciated too.

I would run Hookers for Sure!
Can't beat the price and if you wanted to be emissions legal you could go with dual 3 inch Carsound cats on the collectors and then run the Ypipe over the axle. If the LS1's are anything like the LT1 longtubes, they will soon dominate the market. If you arent doing cats just run a 2.75 inch Ypipe back to 3.5 inch cutout and then into the rest of your exhaust

Ragtop,
I hope not to have any regrets with these same headers. I went for them because of the price. Re: the rasp that you're describing, do you think it'll be more pronounced in my setup since I am running an orp? Is running an orp noticably lounder than the y-pipe w/cats? I've got a spintech muffler and I used to have a flowmaster. I did notice a difference after I switched so I am thinking my exhaust might not turn out to be too loud. Thanks.

chris: Have you heard how the hookers sound? Chris I will make a interchangable Y-pipe set-up if I do this project. The issue is how do the Hookers with ORP sound compared with the macs. I think the SLP's have less rasp but are too expensive unless an awesome deal comes up.

I was thinking about the dynatechs that were cheap and didn't have the AIR & EGR hook-ups (that highlight the car's primary weight savings mechanism. )

1BLKSS: The rasp comes from using the ORP. I put some dynomax race bullets in my ORP to quiet them down.

The Hookers will not have that rasp. None of the longtubes do. You could if you wanted throw a short 3 inch race magnum in one side of the Y and you will have no Rasp. As for the AIR Pump EGR provisions I would get the headers with them ie: Hookers, All you need is the block off plate. I was experiencing problems on the dyno and hooked back up my AIR pump with restrictor plates and the car is running much better now. I am going to keep that in the car and cats and see how fast I can go fully emissions legal. It will be a nice challenge. I think I can hit 11.1x-11.2x with cats on and full exhaust with a 1.48 sixty

Cheers,
Chris

I'm running the FLP's w/ ORP and SLP dual/dual, and I don't have any rasp at all. I saw a used set for sale in the classifieds earlier. You might check them out.

Between 2000 and 2600, the Grotts have a major resonance in the Y pipe. Major enough that Im going to do whatever I can to put a pair of 3" bullets in the Y-pipe (when I get the car back someday). Tolerable, sure, but Joel knows Im an old man.

Is this for the MAC headers? I have the mac w/ORP and it does have that nasty rasp. Will putting a single bullet muffler in one side of the y-pipe cause any other issues? Why does only putting it in one side fix this rasp, what causes it?

I put dual 2.5" bullets in each side.

That's your Borla. It's one of the WORST catbacks for resonance. My friend's Mac setup w/ Borla sounded AWFUL.

Borla is a real quality piece but i cant stand the sound. My LM is very similar but different enough I guess. Exhaust sound is like stereo speakers. I like Cerwin-Vega... Tastes run the gammet

Joel, just a couple comments. You said you'd be doing an interchangeable y-pipe setup. Does that mean one pipe with cats and one without, or just a "cut" section on the pipe with clamps to swap ORP and cats?

The dynotechs require a custom y-pipe, don't they? Doing 2 wouldn't be cheap.

The new Grots have y-pipe options for cats or no cats, but not interchangeable. Again, depending on what you can have custom pipes done for...

Lastly, WTF didn't you speak up sooner? I just made a tentative deal on my SLP's. Sounds like they'd have fit the bill for what you want....
