Default Smoke from the tailpipes

There seems to be a considerable amount of smoke coming from my tailpipes. A little behind the story the car is a 6.0L with head and cam all bolt ons. I broke 2 pistons and had the motor rebuilt at a shop and it only had around 100 miles on the new motor. I have heard it is normal for cars with a new engine to burn a small amount of oil but dont really know what is expected. As soon as the car fires up it is producing a cloud of smoke behind it. The tune is pretty rough so that might have a small amount to do with it. I read several threads suggesting different oils and pvc valve problems etc. Could replacing my PVC valve simply solve this problem or is it because the rings have not seated yet? Some of you are having luck with a catch can. Is this just going in line with the PVC valve to ellminate some of the problems? Thakyou in advance.

valve guides could be shot...PVC is more on the lines of oil comsumption, how many quarts of oil do you use in 2000 miles. It could be normal to get a puff of smoke @ WOT, but not smoking all the time, is it blue? If it is smoking during idle, normal driving , then i think something else is wrong, i.e bad valve guides, rings etc..

It smokes at idle and driving not just at wide open throttle. Like I said it has just been rebuilt and only has 100 miles maybe on it. It has new rings in it. Thought with the new rings to expect some smoke, but not a whole lot.

white smoke=water (may be condinsation in the exhaust pipes at cold start, may be head gasket.)

blue smoke=burning oil. (valve guides, piston rings, ect.)

black or gray smoke=carbon (if this happens when reved or WOT, that's normal. will also smell like gun powder.)

Have the heads been ported. My motor was rebuilt and the heads had previously been ported alot. When the bilder bolted them back on it cracked several of the ports. He pulled the motor and replaced the rings, and it still smoked. Finally he had the heads vaccume tested and found multiple cracks. These heads were ported by the previous owner, and were really over ported. This was a huge mystery for us. Good luck!

Well they are patriot LS6 heads with oversized valves. I got a valve job after I broke a piston and that shouldnt be an issue. The car is most definitely burning oil. I just was wondering what an acceptible rate was. I would prefer none since it is a new motor.

We replaced my heads and I have no smoke now. They say the rings seat after a good 20-30 miles. Everyone we talked to while diagnosing suggested the heads ,and thats what it was.
