Thats what I was thinking. Also, with an aftermarket lid (round at the exit instead of oval and then no silencers) I dont believe there is as much turbulence, hence, not as much need for a screen. New ZO6 MAFs dont have a screen.

Doesn't seem like it solves the fundemental issue: If it flows more air at a given pressure level, how does the meter know that extra air is flowing?
Doesn't the screen eliminate the turbulence in the flow prior to the MAF, rather than turbulence caused within the MAF?

I've never felt that MAF screen really does all that much as far as straightening the airflow. I took my screen off about a week or two before I ported the MAF and I noticed no change whatsoever in either horsepower, or driveability. The car didn't idle funny, it didn't surge, nothing. So if the airflow was turbulent without it, you'd think something would show up.

When I removed the screen in my stock MAF the LTRIMS rose about 2-3% and gave me about 3/4 of a degree in timing. That was all I noticed as well.
When I put in the ported unit my LTRIMS shot up to 16% and I gained an additional degree of timing but had cruise to WOT lean conditions on the dyno.

This can be done with the right tools. I did it this way when I originally ported my MAF. I took the screen out a few weeks later. Don't know if it made any difference.
I used a Roto-Zip to cut the center divider. I set the bit depth and used it like an Endmill. Worked really well. I marred the screen up just a little on both sides. Took a metal scribe and re-opened the holes in the screen I jacked up. (5-6 on each side)
Its not impossible if you have the right tools. A Mill would be the ideal machine to do this on. Wish I still had one.

Idea on porting MAFS
I have been thinking about this the past couple of days and wanted to run it past you. We all know porting the MAF, removing the screen and center divider increases airflow but at the same time reduces the sensors ability to meter air properly. What if you removed the center divider, ported the inside of the MAF and left the screen in place? That way the airflow would not be turbulent and hit the sensor across the MAF much more evenly. Do you think this would reduce the LTRIM differential but still support higher airflow and better cruise to WOT AF transitions?

Good luck knocking out the screen without damaging it. Interesting idea, but hard to do.
