Default building a good LS1 out of two bad ones....

let's say between two blown engines there's enough good parts to make a single running engine. (block from one, pistons from another...)

assuming all stock parts, how much machining would be required? what parts couldn't be moved due to wear? (for example, I know that the lifters supposedly need to be replaced in the same order they came out, to keep wear even. don't know how much truth there is to this)

assuming this didn't cost much to put together, might it be worth it?

Do two rights make a wrong? LOL

It's not a bad idea, and I know what shortblock you are thinking of. Depends on the condition of the cylinder walls on that other block, and the condition of the cranks. You would need a usable crank, and block... If that one block has a rod knock then there is a possibility that the crank is messed up just as an FYI.

may cost some small coin to have everything at a machine shop to determine whats good and whats not so consider that into the cost

So I could have de-assemble everything, see if the block is OK on engine #1, have the crankshafts from both engines & 8 pistons and rods checked, I'd probably get new bearings & rings....

definately have enough pushrods & lifters to reassemble, hope the rockers are good on the heads.

how much do you think it would cost to have a machine shop check the parts out???

I don't want this to get too expensive, but I'm already thinking stronger springs, port the heads, etc... I just don't have a car to throw the engine into....yet.

I'm going to get myself in trouble.

If the good block still has the crosshatching in the cylinder bores then it's worth doing IMO. I think a few hundos to get stuff checked and partially assembled.
