Default Summer Project Time-engine build

I just got my truck back from the dealer with a new engine. I paid the core on the old one and took it home to. It's a 4.8 vortec with a hole in the #5 piston. I am getting suggestions on what to do with it over on the truck forum and thought I would ask the creative minds here to work on it too. The only thing I still have to be capable of doing is tow a 6000# travel trailer, so keep that in mind. This will be a first ground up build for me so I may ask some dumb questions along the way. My goal is to get into the 12's with or without N2O, I don't care which. I know I will have to beef up the traction to get there and plan on getting a T/C, either 2600 or 3000. You can see the truck in my sig link. I would also like to try to keep a budget, so dicounts and slightly used parts will be used. I want to try to drop the engine by October, so there is plenty of time to experiment. <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

I might be able to scrounge up a stock LS1 crank and stock LS1 rods for you. Then I'd have the block bored out as big as safely possible and order some custom forged pistons. Have the rotating assembly balanced and assembled. Probably looking at under $2K total for the shortblock. Then have those heads ported/polished and fitted with 2.02/1.55 valves. Then a good camshaft.

Or, keep your eyes peeled for anyone selling an aluminum 5.7L block and ****** it up. Then you could sell the iron block to someone that wants a huge nitrous or turbo motor.

I am willing to deal on the block. As far as the heads go , I think I am going to start there and try them out on my truck for a while before dropping the project in.
