Just normal LS1 oil slurping?

Yep, the LS1 is just one of those engines that tends to burn oil, and even though some oils will reduce it, there is no sense trying to completely eliminate it, because in some cases that's just not going to happen.

Short skirt pistons + low tension rings = power & oil usage I guess. Kinda like in body building you gotta gain a LITTLE fat at the least if you are bulking for muscle.

If you've got a consumption problem, GC 0w30 is very good at reducing it (just keep in mind if you burn a lot, that nothing is going to eliminate it totally) That oil has worked extremely well for me so far. But since you ask for something other than GC or Amsoil, I'd also recommend Redline. Go for their 5w40 if you drive it hard (autocross, road race) or live in a hot climate. For normal driving, their 5w30 will work just fine. Royal Purple's race oils are also great (Racing 41 is an excellent match for the LS1) and can safely be used on the street for 5-6k intervals.

As I mentioned, I am switching to Pennzoil Platinum and will be using their 5w30. I can't say for sure how it's going to do in terms of engine wear or oil consumption but I'll be sure to post my results here once I get them. This oil has been showing very good oil analysis results in many different vehicles, and currently there are a lot of places selling it for a killer price (I've seen as low as 99 cents a quart after rebate)

This oil is very hard to find, and I don't know anyone who is running it. If you can find it, by all means give it a try, but get an oil analysis done after you've run it for a while, and see how it's performing.

Whatever oil you guys choose, I highly recommend getting an oil analysis done, as it will often help you eliminate other problems, such as an air intake leak (which would show up as having too much silicon-or dirt, in your oil)

My car uses the same now as it did with 10-30 Castrol Syntec (10.1CST@100*C). Wierd. (uses about 1/2 qt every 2-2500 miles).
