The surge you are feeling could be the fans kicking in, they sometimes make that weird computer sound and the electrical system feels like it surges for a sec. That is just an opinion. <img src="images/icons/confused.gif" border="0">

Default Engine Surge?

I have a 98 TA w/43,000 miles. Slightly modded (exhaust, lid....the basics). Well at idle I'm getting some surging, my rpm's nor my oil presseure gauge show any kinda of sudden drops, it feels fine at WOT.

I've also heard that in order to save fuel the computer will start to shut off injectors momentarily at idle. Is this correct?

any input is welcome and appreciated.

Bad plugs, wires, dirty injectors.

No, the PCM doesn't cut out injectors at idle.

Well, the plugs dont have more than 5k on them. Wires maybe 10K. the injectors is a thought though. What do you recommend to clean them. Type that you pour in the fuel tank or have it professionaly done? Or is there a way of doing it myself.

This is an internally stock engine, correct?

I don't know much about injector cleaning. I don't know if the pour in stuff really works or not. Maybe someone can help us out here.

Could you describe the surge better?

Yes, its a internaly stock motor.

The surge is noticable by sound inside and out of the car. While sitting inside it feels like the rpm's drop suddenly then go back up. RPM gauge doesnt move but my oil pressure gauge likes to shake quit a bit.

So it's more like a sudden shimmy or skip? That still sounds like an ignition problem. What plugs and what gap?

So whats the deal??? Why do almost every LS1 have a miss at idle?? not setting codes, but if you look at a tech II you will see a single miss fire every so often. I have talked to a few GM mechanics, and they say the LS1's miss during idle for fuel consumption as well as emissions at idle. My 2001 LS1 had 1500 miles on it and slightly missed..no codes or anything and only at idle when warmed up. I have also seen numerous other LS1's do the same. The RPM's dont shutter, but you feel just a slight miss.

If he had an ignition problem, wouldnt he notice it at WOT or at other times, not just idle??

My car started surging a few weeks ago. I just changed plugs on the 12th, and it still surges, my wires are Msd's.
I did have an oil analysis a while ago and it said I have fuel in the oil. Would that mean I have a bad injector? My plugs all looked great when I changed them. My car has 30k miles on it.

I am definatly haveing the same problems as you guys. My car is fine when in open loop but as soon as it warms up and goes into closed loop and the idle drops to 500 it will start to sputter. It is very intermitten and the force of the Miss/surge changes. I have tried to trouble shoot what i can. I replaced the plugs and wires, i replaced alternator ( which was bad) no correlation. I took it and have a diagnositc put on it for a qucik look at what was happening and it said that number four was causing the porblem. I pulled number four and it definalty was running lean ( a white tip on the plug). I am now leading myslef to believe it may be a dirty injector. Im planning on going to dealrship for force cleaning of injectors. I will get back with results.
