Default What am I missing?

I'm a noob looking to join the LS1/LS6 ranks. Please forgive my ignorance about these engines and where I should post this question. Here goes.

So I have a nice 69 Firebird that I have gotten the urge to go pro-touring. Of course that means a modern drivetrain. While checking out LS6 long block prices I've noticed something that I can't quite resolve.

A new GMPP LS6 long block (PN 12498399) goes for around $5200-$5400 before S&H. Granted it does have a new F-body oil pan included. On the other hand I've found that a Goodwrench Cadillac LS6 crate long block
(PN 89017653) goes for around $4100-$4300 WITH S&H.

So if the oil pan on the GMPP LS6 and the S&H on the Caddy LS6 are a wash (actually the pan is cheaper) then what am I missing between the two packages? Are they not the same thing? They are rated at same HP and torque. I must be missing something obvious, but then, I am a noob. Any insight is appreciated

Anyone?
Not that it matters to me personally because I'm going a different route, but gmpartsdirect has the Cadillac LS6 long block available (PN 89017653) in stock.
Even with a core charge and their outrageous S&H charge the price is $4100. Might save a member or two from buying the same thing from GMPP for another $1200 before S&H.
Or maybe I am missing something.

Im Not sure whats Different between the Two. But I do know this Much. If you looking for an LSx Based Long Block. You can get them alot Cheaper then tough GM.
Do a searce on Ebay for LS1 And LS6 Engines. There going for anywhere between 2500 and 4000 used with the Tranny. If you want a link to a New long block creap (only $2500)here you go.

Hope this helps a little. Im just trying to help a Brother save money. Good luck with the Build.

Totally agree with you. In fact I found a complete take out LS1 drivetrain for $2500. Hoping I can close the deal today.

Most of the lower priced stuff is used or LS1 based and is certainly a viable option. But I was curious as to how essentially the same new LS6 long block can have such a different price. For those looking at going that route it may save some money.

As Camaro Junkie pointed out I will go the lower cost take out route.

I saw a deal for a LS1 complete assembled block on a great GM site I use frequently. They seem to be great as far as shipping and customer service is top notch. (So far)

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...catalogid=3064

hope that works, I think it's a good deal.

I was lucky enough to find a 57k mile LS1 with tranny for a steal.

Thanks for the info. I'm working on a good deal with a member here for a complete take out but if that doesn't work out I'll look into trademotion. Anyone else have any place they would trust for used LS1 stuff.

Oh, and is there any discernable difference between the 2 LS6 longblocks mentioned earlier?
Just curious.
Thanks again

I believe an LS6 LONG BLOCK would yield more HP. The LS6 was the engine in the ZO6 pre-07' Which was ~400hp.

Some '02 F-body's have the LS6 short block (~25% of them) with LS1 components and as far as that goes there is no performance difference and only one minor change. There is a sticky about that somewhere in the forum.

Hope this helps and good luck doing buying your LSX!
