The stock 3.42's would be good with either cam but you could go with a 3.73+ gear. The guys who are hitting 400 rwhp on stock 98 heads either are on a generous dyno or have a huge cam (trex sized). Again on a dyno jet my 232/238 only put down 370 rwhp, and that was due to the heads as they werent able to breath enough with the cam in the upper rpms.
Thanks for the input!

I saw a 98 Z28 for sale here not too long ago with a Trex cam and the car made like 423rwhp on stock 98 heads. I think 400rwhp will take a big cam on stock heads but is achievable.

I really like the G5x3 idea. However, this will be completely blowing my budget. TSP offers some really cheap cam kits. $699 with the PRC springs, pushrods, and cam etc.
I know this is excluding the chain and oil pump and gaskets etc.

LGs cam kits are quite expensive for nearly the same thing. I have nothing against LG (from what I hear there a great company), its just my budget will not allow it. Plus I can't peice together a cheaper cam kit than what TSP offers.

I personally don't mind shifting a little higher than 6200-6300. IMO.

However, I'm not looking to go over 6500-6700 RPM.

I really like the idea of the custom cams suggested in this thread. But, I'd like to go just a little larger though.

I'f someone could come up with a cam for me like in the range of TSP 233/239 and a MS3 or something, I think I can acheive my goals.

Thanks again guys, keep them coming!

Ok guys, I also setup a Poll in the dyno section for 98 cam only cars.

Feel free to vote and share your setup.

Not only would this help me, but it will help future 98 owners wondering the same questions

thanks!

This same exact Cam and bolt -ons on a 02 car did 415rwhp. That shows the difference All the 98 car's I've dyno'd/built with Cam only type setup's never do as good as the newer cars, plus the 98's are harder to tune.Expecially big cams.

So, daily driver and 400rwhp is kind of a long shot.(for a 98 of course)

Yup I went into Don's shop with the goal of 400 rwhp not knowing how bad the 98 heads flow. My car dynoed 300 rwhp with mac mids and cats, which is a little low, but still the cam/ls6 intake/pulley/ported tb/gutted cats netted me 70 additional rwhp which i was very happy about. I wouldnt make your cam decision simply on a dyno number your chasing as you could have a much more streetable setup with a cam similar to the one slowhawk had ground for me and make real good power.

If your on a budget get patriot ls6's or prc ls6's, but I say hold off on the heads unless you want all the work done at once because you will be able to enjoy the additional power from the cam and then once you get used to it you can get a nice set of ls6 style heads, which will probably net you another 35+ rwhp depending on cam size.
