Default Procedure for claying piston to valve clearance?

What is the procedure for claying for clearance? I was under the impression that I just put clay on the piston, put the head on with no gasket, put a couple bolts in and turn the crank a couple times.

Thanks.

You are on the right track, but you need to check it with a head gasket,or the pistons will hit the heads while turning the crankshaft. Also having the head gasket on gives an accurate results. It also helps to use checker springs instead of the springs you will be using( to avoid pushing the lifter plunger into the lifter and giving false readings) <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">
