Default To install or not to install...........

OK here's the dealio........

I just recently aquired a used cam,now I am having second thoughts about installing a used cam in my car.

I know,I shoulda thought about that BEFORE I bought it,and I did.....

But now that I have it,...I am having second thoughts

It looks fine,it's not that.......

I would like to know what the general concensus is here...

I see lots of cams swapped out and for sale all the time,so I guess I assumed it's of no real issue

What's the deal guys? throw it in and don't look back or what?
I am just looking for feedback, people who have done this and are happy/satisfied with the results

TIA,the worry wart

As long as the surface of the cam looks good, I'd say go for it. The fact that a cam has been used is no reason for it to cause any damage whatsoever. Just inspect it very thoroughly (preferrably with a magnifying glass) and throw it in if it looks good.

Just for the record, what exactly should I be looking for?
No nicks/scratches in the cam journal and lobes?

Anything else?

I bought a used TR 230 from a member of this board and really worked out for me, I never had any second thoughts about it.

Check also for surface rust and damage to the alignment pin on the front. Other than that, you pretty much covered it. Also, be sure to keep that thing oiled up while you decide so it doesn't start to rust.

While the beauty and benefits of roller lifter cams is that the cam lobes will last virtually forever with less damage than the old school non-roller lifter cams, the cam journals will still wear due to the same bearing system. I would concentrate my inspection on the journal's conditions to determine the cams integrity..

It had a little surface rust, but they took it to a polishing wheel and cleaned it all up.

Well, the only reason I didn't post them originally is because most all you guys consider it a baby cam......

I am in Ca.,and although I want more power,I would still like to fly under the radar as far as the smog police are concerned.

I have been told by many that a 224/228 cam on a 114 should pass emissions here, but some say it can be a little iffy........

I have been told staying in the 224/224 range would be a safer choice ,basically should pass no problem

I ran a cross a thunder racing 224/227 563/569 on a 114( 113.6 tecnically)

So I grabbed it and I am hoping I made a good choice for me

It is their "blower/nitrous cam"

Although I have no intention to run nitrous and I am not "blown" I still am hopeful it will provide a nice power increase

Just for the record it is a 98 vette a-4 with stock 2005 ls2 heads and afr-duals already installed.... Dynoed 337 rwhp, hoping I can get up near 380

Like it was said before There should be no issues with a used cam as long as you can verify that the cam is what they said it is and it is in good condition as described before.

I bought a cam from a member a while back and it turned out to be something different than advertised.

i have a used TSP 233/239 in my car...its been in for 6500 miles in less than 2.5 months without any problems.
I had a TR227 before this cam...it made 380 rwhp untuned through midlength headers...Your car should make 380 once its tuned and all thought he auto. It had excellet drivability...
