Due to LS1 have extremely shitty rings, I do not recommend anyone running 5w30 that drives their car hard. I would only run that thin of an oil while breaking a motor in. After around 1500 break in miles when the seals have been seated, going to a thicker oil will definately be better for prolonging ring life.

Ever poured some 5w30 in your hand? Looks like colored water. Do you really trust something that thin to protect your bottom end when you're constantly spinning it up to 6000 rpm's daily??

I ran Valvoline 10w30 Synpower in all 3 of my Camaro's, and the same in my LS1. Never had a problem and my LS1 does not smoke at all.

I'm by no means an oil expert, but won't 5w-30 and 10w-30 have the same thickness at operating temp? I was under the impression that 5w-30 was supposed to be thinner oil when cold for quicker circulation and easier circulation on startups.

I pulled this off of a local F-body mailing list, not responsible for it's content. It's a TSB, and applies to 1999 & 2000 M.Y.'s, including Vettes...

99-2000 Camaro,Firebird,Corvette w/ vin G or S engine.Subject:High oil consuption may be caused by faulty piston rings .Oil consumption may be one quart in 400 to 600 miles. The problem is found more often in cars w/ manuel transmissions where the engine is more likely to spend more time at higher rpm.New piston rings from kit #88894299 should be installed, but not the whole set.Install only the number 2 compression ring .Leave the the original number 1 compression ring and the oil ring rails on the pistons.Do not dress or hone the cylinder bore.Changing the original bore finish may make the problem worse.Bulletin 01-06-01-023.

It does show up on Alldata's list under 2000 Pontiac Firebird. http://www.alldata.com/recalls/
Hope this helps

Rich

5w-30 Mobil One

Since 3000 miles. Now at 75,000. Doesn't use a drop between changes. So yeah, I trust it completely

For those of you running Mobile One, Is that the special Alabama blend? I thought that was only available in Alabama?

Why not 15w-30? On the Mobile One website it says its formulated for high performance/high reving cars.

15 weight on cold startups is too thick. It'll be harder on the oil pump to get the oil flowing, and you'll have less engine protection on cold startups (especially bearings). The hardest starts are cold ones, and you want to get oil circulating as fast as you possibly can. I'd worry about spinning a bearing w/ a cold 15 wt. oil in a stock LS1.

So then, if somebody's car is sucking a quart to a quart and a half every . . . oh say . . . 4 -5 thousand miles; that would be considered ok

I couldn't agree with you more. 5W30 was designed for CAFE (emissions). It can AND WILL displace from the bearings at high rpm and you can very well find yourself with spun rod bearings as a result. I looked at many of the cases of spun bearings on LS1s in the past and 5W30 was the oil in almost every one of the cases

Though 5W30 and 10W30 have the same base, the additives that allow the cold start viscosity will thin out the base. Thus 5W30 is significantly thinner that 10W30 at operating temps.

I personally run 10W30 but will be switching to good ol' molasses oil once it warms up a bit since I'm getting up there in mileage (15W50 I think)
