Default cam install question concerning lifters...

ive read the tech articles on installing a cam, and was wondering, if i should take the intake manifold off, so that im SURE the lefters wont fall, or if should just take my chances, and just swap the cams, chancing the lifters not falling. most say to just swap, but im wondering what most people think. thanks for your info!

You cannot get to the lifters with the intake manifold off like older SBCs, etc. The only to take the lifters out is to pull the heads.

Jason is correct you will have to pull the heads to get to the lifters. Go get 16 magnet extentions and slide them down the lifter bores to hold them into place while you slide the cam out. I would NOT pull the cam out without the magnets because i almost attempted it that way and found that i had four lifters that would not hold in their bores without the magnets. Use the magnets, cheap insurance.

I had concerns just like you. Then I saw a picture of a cam install that showed telescoping magnets in place where the pushrods go and the magnets were held fast to the head with plastic clothes pins. This is what I did. It's a bit ****, butt it works. (hahaha, Pun intended)! Buy the magnets at Wal-Mart for $1.69 ea. The clothes pins cost about $2.50 for a pack of 30.

Have fun,
email me if you want more details,
John
