Help out a newbie (MAC Headers)
My MAC Headers with ORP will be hear tommorow.
I already have a 80 series Flow Master muffler, and Yank Torque Converter.
I will not be running any cats because I read the MAC Cats didn't flow well (worse than stock.)
I was also told I couldn't use my stock cats with MAC's.
My question is, is this going to be too loud?
I still have the chance to reject shipment that is due here tommorow by UPS. I do not want a crappy sounding car but the increased HP sounds good.
What are your opinions and what would you do?
Does anyone know of a site that has wav files etc of how this setup might sound before I install it?
Loud is OK just not crappy cheap sounding loud.

I use my stock cats with the Macs as does a friend of mine. What was the reason for not being able to use them? As for being too loud, I think with the 80 series muffler on, it shouldn't be that bad. For me, I wouldn't have an offroad Y just cause I'm afraid of a cop looking underneath my car.... I'd get gutted cats or something instead. Hope that helps.

Well Max, you can't use your stock cats on the stock y-pipe, but you can (and I would say should) have someone cut them off the stock pipe, and weld them into your ORP. If you don't and a cop looks under your car for cats and they're not there, it's like a $2500 fine. <img src="gr_eek2.gif" border="0"> I say accept the shipment and put 'em on there - it'd be a nice add on for you, and you'll probably have to pay some lame *** restocking fee if you refuse 'em. I've heard a couple cars w/ Mac's and I like the way they sound.

MAC headers and ORP sounds like ***! It sounds very very raspy and untuned between 2200-2800 RPM. It will really **** you off.
Get the Off road pipe, then buy a set of Carsound 3" cats. They are the best cat on the market and flow better then stock. Then have a good muffler shop weld them in for you.
It will be loud and raspy until you get cats. Mac headers are great, but sound really bad without cats. Also you will need to buy a Flowmaster collector to replace the MAC collector where the Y pipe comes together. You will pick up some HP by replacing it. It is only a $50 part, plus the cost of having it welded in.

Max, Just have a single bullet muffler welded in the I pipe to get rid of the rasp. That's what I'm going to do.

If your worried about the converter, I have one CATCO 3" high flow converter that I'd sell you for $50, it only has 1k miles on it at the most and you could put it after the y-pipe.

Can someone help me out for a CAT size there are several sizes listed. It will be for the MAC Headers with ORP from Thunder Racing.
I think I will feel much more comfortable with CATS (or is it just a fix it ticket in CA. if you are caught?)
If that is the case I will wait for the ticket and then add them :-)

The big fine isn't for headers, you get it if the cops check your cats, and you don't have any. I think it's like $1250/missing cat, and since we have 2, it comes to $2500. Not positive if that's exactly how it works, but you want to have cats (or at least something that looks like cats). Really. I promise.

Is it really so bad in CA that cops look under your car for cats? That’s nuts. The only time we worry about that crap is when going in for the test here in IL. I don’t have cats. I’ve spent the better part of two years without them. I’ve never heard of anybody getting a ticket for no cats from a cop here in IL.

To avoid it all though I just ordered a set of Carsound Race Cats. Better safe than sorry and I hear they flow real well. Should sound better too. Expensive setup though but I should be low 12's. Ralph will also be adding a Tranny Cooler for me.

Good move getting a tranny cooler. Everyone with a small converter should get one, especially with the temps that you get up in Sac. So, when are you going to hit the track?

you are going to need tires with that TC if you even want to think about running a mid 12.
Most likely with a TC and street tires, you will run 13s at SAC. A couple guys I know have done that same thing. <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">
