how long do they usually last on average. I just bought some heads, and the guy that i bought the heads from said that there are patriot "gold" springs on there and that they have 5k miles....so when should i expect to swap them out?

they usually say change them at about 15k miles, but I have seen firsthand people going 35k + with those springs on 230/236 cams and an ms3 and not have many problems.

I would either change them now or after 5K miles. Two reasons, do you have documented proof of the mileage and secondly you don't know how they were driven. A failure could be costly so I would personally tend to error on the side of caution, especially when it comes to valve train parts that can cause a lot of damage should they fail.

I actually bought the heads off of here. The guy is pretty cool, and told me that the heads and springs were already gone through, but i'm gonna take it to a machine shop.

Have the machine shop check the springs.

We have seen customers with pretty large cams that had 25k+ plud and the springs still be within the advertised specs. The best thing would be to check them now so you know exactly what you have.

With a valve spring pressure tester, you can buy mini ones that you use with a vice for relatively cheap.

yea but can you predict the amount of life they would have left with a pressure tester?

Well, the pressure tester would give a hint as to how hard they've been run. The spring gets weaker and weaker the more it's used, so a weak spring pressure would show they don't have much left. However, a spring could show proper pressure at the seat and still fail.
