Default XE-R 224 is in!

We finished up the cam swap right at 2 this morning, and we were all anxious to turn the key to see how she'd idle. The specs are 224/224 @ .050", .581"/.581", 112 LSA. Two degrees of advance was ground into the cam. We installed the Comp 918 springs, 772 retainers, and 7.4" hardened pushrods with it. FWIW, I'm still running on the Ed Wright tuning that he did for my stock engine. I have to give it some gas to get it to initially fire, and it fires right up. I try to ease the throttle back easy in hopes that it would find an idle, but it immediately died. I cranked it back up without applying the throttle, and it found its idle pretty quick. This cam is idling in an A4 at 625 RPM! It isn't surging, it's not stalling when I put it in gear, etc. etc. The last time I had a cammed LS1, it was a 383 with MTI's "R1". If you want some idle problems in an A4, then I'd recommend trying that one out.
I'm simply AMAZED at how docile this cam is! You can hear it chugging nice at 625-700 RPM. Ed's tuning has made it nice to drive. When I hit the brakes and the converter unlocks, the RPM's won't drop below 1,000 RPM until the car is at a dead-stop. Once it's stopped, the idle drops down to 625 RPM or so. I'll probably have Ed set it at 750. With that idle, the cam won't be too noticable at all. It drives like stock, and every once in a while the IAC tries to wreak havoc w/ the low idle if I let it idle in gear for too long. I'm going to crack the TB blade open a little more today to get the idle right at 700 RPM. I can't stress how well this cam is doing in my car! I had totally different expectations.
At WOT, the car just PULLS! Top-end is REALLY nice, even in this 3,200' Lubbock altitude. The PT4400 is an excellent pairing with this cam. M6's are going to HATE me from a roll. Third gear pulls incredibly hard w/ the new cam/converter combo.
I want to say thanks to Joseph for staying up until 2 in the morning to finish the swap. He had to be at work at 8 this morning. He's a pretty meticulous guy. I also want to say thanks to Tom and Larry at Speed Inc. I bought the cam package from them, and it was originally supposed to be two-day aired to me on Monday. Well, for some reason, Comp did not get the pushrods, retainers, and springs out on Monday. I spoke with Tom Wednesday afternoon, and he asked when I had to have the stuff by. I told him that we were planning on installing it Thursday evening and I was driving to Lubbock for the swap, and he said that he would have the stuff overnighted from Comp to me, and he would pay the difference in shipping! Tom and Larry have both been GREAT to work with, and they got me the package for a great price, too. I highly recommend Speed Inc.! Their customer service has been top notch.
I hope to have some new track times no later than two weeks from now. I'll get two solid passes in before getting kicked off, so I'll have to make them count. I'm buying Jason's 4-pt. cage out of his T/A, and I'm going to have Wolfe add the 5th point to it once it's installed. It'll be a removable swingout so I don't have to crawl over it when on the street. Mid-11's with spring weather ought to be pretty easy so long as I fully hook.
Tommy - If you read this, let's keep it quiet for tonight. I have a certain gassed yellow 5.0L that is calling me out.

Trevor,

Glad to see that you have your Hot Rod running well.

I hope to see the track times real soon. I need to see what I will be shooting for.

My Hot Rod will not be finished untill the last week of April. Maybe we can have a LittleDrag Race with are 2002 Z28's.

Best of Luck with your new combo.

That's great Trevor. I'm trying to decide between that cam and the tr224. I know you got that one because you wanted the lift, I'm just worried about running the 918 springs on the xe-r cam. Can't wait to see your track times.

Kick *** Trevor. I hear what you mean about being tame. My TR224 112 LSA cam is the same way. Should have gone bigger, haha. Let's see some track times soon.

Coach - Rumor has it that your mods are a step further than mine. I don't think you'll have a problem cracking my ET, whatever it may end up being. It would still be a blast to run them down the 1/4 side by side!
Zoo - I know that the 918's are still pretty new, but so far so good (KNOCK ON WOOD!). Only time will tell just how well they'll hold up to the ramps, lift, and RPM's. I think we all have our fingers crossed.
Patrick - This cam is perfect for me. I couldn't have nailed it any better. I raised the idle some, and it's now chugging around 800-825. It seems to lope harder now w/ the higher idle. LOL! I opened the cutout and fired it up, and you can REALLY hear the cam then! The SLP dual/dual tames it down a lot.
Jason - I gave the Isuzu a Comp Cams sticker, so I don't think it'll mind if I use the cage. Besides, we don't want to add weight to the hoss Isuzu!

Congrats Trevor I think those 918s will hold up nicely as long as you get them to proper heat range before some high RPM runs. Im sure you will see some nice ET gain going from the SLP muffler to the cutout out now with the cam. Get some times and let me know Maybe i can get back to the track soon with my new posi, been almost 2 months now with a broke posi I need my 11.5 fix lol.

Scott, I know what ya mean about the 11.5 fix. I'm more than ready to see just how hard she'll 60' with the new setup. 1.5's will be in the bag with full traction. I think those adjustable Hal struts are really going to come in handy now.
I agree with you on the springs. I'm very uptight about having the car up to full operating temp (including trans) before I go beating on it. Hopefully these springs will be the answer to all of our 941 nightmares.
I hope to have the car on the dyno next Friday, and I'll definitely test out the cutout to see just how much power I stand to gain with it open. I want to see how much and where this cam is building power.

I believe the key to longevity with 918 springs on XER lobes will be to keep revs on the low side, nothing over 6600, or plan on changing them, as far as heating everything up before you beat on motor, i would use Synthetic oil and keep motor real cool when your going to drag race it, fast action cams heat up springs plenty fast and heat is what kills springs! This is a fact.

Hey Trevor,

The bird goes in tomorrow morning to try and get the Holley to quit leaking. Did Sean tell you what we got with the LS6 manifold, it's crazy man. I'm hopin that beast don't leak again. I like my 224 but Ed has the idle a little high, 950 RPM. You don't have heads yet do ya? Wanna race!!! Talk to you when you get home. Later

Mark,

Sure, I'll race! You should pull me, but it will still be fun w/ the PT4400. Let me know how the intake worked out for ya this time. Hopefully you were able to leave with it on! 950 is WAY too high, IMO. I have mine sitting at 800-825 right now, and it's perfect.
