Default GM Hot cam for LS1

Is anyone using the GM hot cam in an LS1? This is the cam that is similar to the LT4 hot cam. Just want to know what you think of it? Likes? Dislikes?
I want to go with a mild cam with good power and am considering this one.

I recommend a bit of research using the search feature of the forum.

I looked at this cam a couple of years ago, but for the $ there are sooooooooooo many more options now that 2-3 years ago.

I had it for a year, I liked it, but it is a bit small compared to the choices out there

im going to run it. it can be used wit ha blower because of the little overlap, and makes decent USABLE power and tq...most people see 30rwhp/rwtq out of it with bolt ons and a tune

I squeezed 36rwhp out of it. I like it, for a small cam its not too bad.

you might want to look into the asa cam. my bud put down 396hp and 372 tq with it. it had a lot of duration but low lift, so you can slap on ls6 valve springs and never have to deal with them again.

You're going to want to do pushrods too, so tack on another hundred bucks. I say go with another cam. TSP has reduced the price of their cam kits with 918 springs, pushrods, any cam you want, and i think Titanium retianers. $579.99
You could get a custom cam too, same price if im not mistaken. The parts in this deal are a lot stronger than GM stuff and plus the cams are going to be more powerfull. With the torquer V2 you can crank out about 400rwhp and still drive the heck out of it. So for really not that much more you can get a heck of a lot more! The 918 spring kit goes for over $400 alone, pushrods are $100, cams can be $400. This is a smokin deal.

the hotcam is a good kit for the money, the kit from GM comes with springs also.

224 cam is a waste of time and money IMO. hotcam is only a waste of time.. if you are going to cam go big or go home..

Thanks guys,
The TSP deal is smokin, but I dont need everything. I only need cam and pushrods, I have a set of SLP CNC ported heads with Manley springs, which are comparable to the Comp cams 918 Beehives. I was wondering about the hot cam because I dont want to go over .550 lift, my springs will handle .600 lift but I dont want to stress the valve train that much. I'll probably go with one of the milder Comp grinds. Dont know, I'm still a little confused. There are so many great cams out there. Thanks again.

I don't think I could disagree with you more strongly with out being rude.

As most people stated it's not a bad cam just a dated setup frankly for me it grumbles too much for what it is, all bark no bite lol!

Depending on exactly how mild you want you might want to look into one of the tried and true 224s, but for some honestly that might be too large and there are some smaller and more tame like the CheaTR and the old man cam.

How high do you want to spin the motor and what parts are you willing to change other then the cam if any?

This is what I was trying to find out. I probably will spin the motor 6500-6600, as I dont want to get into the bottom end just yet. I am changing the heads, cam, intake, LT headers, ORY, trans kit, 3200 Vigilante converter, suspension and 3.42 gears, along with all the periferals that are needed. The intake will be an LS6 or maybe a BBK. I have everything except the cam and the intake now.

If you want to take that '98 LS1 to 6500-6600, you better invest in a set of Katech rod bolts or you'll be digging into the bottom end in short order. Stock rod bolts + high RPM = disaster.

Try doing some reading up on the smaller cams then like ones I posted up, I mean I can sway you one way or the other but I rather see you pick your own cam, then you won't be biased as much and you can pick your own cam that will suit you better.

I'm sure you pass smog just as well and get just as good milage and you don't need to worry about rod bolts going with the extra revs or springs giving out either correct?

Big cams are not the only way to go and honestly, go big or go home is a pretty bad idea esp for a daily.

Couldn't agree more. Too some people a 224 is too big already. All depends on your goals with the car.

I'd skip the Hotcam and go with something slightly larger but still in the LS6 valve spring territory if you're on a budget and don't wish to make big time power. If you're looking for a 360 - 390 horse cam only car you're gonna want to step up to something in the 224 range. Between a 224 and a hotcam you aren't going to suffer any driveability however you will notice a nice power gain.

If you're out for a max power effort and don't care how you get there. Go with something big and nasty with springs to match.

Pretty simple logic. My Cartek 2x is pretty darn driveable! Of course it's gonna be tight getting through the e-test this year with it but we'll see what some creative tuning can do...

I need a friggin' LS6 intake and a pulley to get withing breathing distance of 400 on my crappy old 98 LS1.
