What would make the oil look thin?

What would make the oil look thin? I checked my oil today, after changing it with Valvoline 10w30, and the oil looked very thin. I could barely make it out on the dipstick. Also, I had some steam/smoke coming from the passenger-side manifold area, but I think that it was just from spilled coolant. Any ideas?

Re: What would make the oil look thin? Right after I did my oil change, 5w30 Mobil 1 Synthetic, it looked really thin, I kept putting it back in the motor to try to get a reading on the stick, but after I let the motor run for like 5 mins I rechecked and finally got a good reading...
