main bearing number 3

Looking at the main bearings in the motor and notice that number 3 has grooves cut into the sides. Do sbc clevite77/federal mogul bearings have these grooves in the side and are they necessary. Just thought it looked odd

#3 is the thrust bearing on the LS1. This is why it looks different than the other main bearings.

Thats the ultimate position for it, and those grooves supply oil to thrust surfaces.
