Default Head & cam install, do I have everything?

If the bolts & gaskets come tomorrow, I plan to get busy. (Thanks to Thunder!)

I will have all bolts & gaskets, antifreeze, Head, Cam, (springs pre installed.) I will have brake cleaner (to clean off pistons & gasket surface).

I know I need tq wrench, are there any other special tools I will need? Am I missing anything else? Going to John site to read up a little, Please feel free to chime in on anything I might have overlooked. Loctite? What kind?

What type of head bolts are you using? If they are non torque to yield what torque figures do they use? New razors are a good way to clean gasket off block, if you are careful.Use a vacuum to keep debris out of bolt holes and motor as you scrape block deck surface, use some type of break in lube on valve tips and pushrod ends.

Thanks. I guess no one else here does their own head & cam. I forgot to mention to tap out each hole.

The 10 and 15 mm socket is your best friend during heads/cam swaps. I think the AC lines are 13mm.

I found that a ratchet wrench (correct name) was very handy for removing the power steering off the driver's head.

You must remove the coolant from the bolt holes. I have seen two LS1 blocks with cracks in them from hydraulicing.

A protractor makes for a nice DIY'er angle meter.

You'll be leaning on the fenders alot, perhaps some fender covers?

Just did one last week...I used Blue Loctite. I hear the red is a bit stronger, but I'm sure both will do the job. Good luck with the crank pulley. Probably the most frustrating out of everything. We ended up welding two of the old bolts together...used it to pull the new one on. Might already have this, but the Hanes manual came in very handy for various torque specs. New spark plugs, oil, oil filter, assembly lube. Other than that, sounds like you're good to go. Good luck!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I used E.O.S. from the Gm dealership. It is a super sticky thick oil engine lube. Cost under $5 I think too. That is what I poured on my cam, lifters, in oil my new ARE oil pump, etc.

Make sure your sockets are 6 point and not 12 pointers. you don't want to round any bolt heads off.
