Default Cam Specs?

I am thinking about going to a Comp Cam high lift single pattern 226 cam. My old cam is a early stage I(99). The question is whats the specs on the early MTI cams? Will I pick a noticable amount of power from the 226 over what must be a little MTI cam? Thanks for any info Troy

You might call MTI to get the specs. I know that in the summer of '99 my friend had an MTI heads/cam installed, and he got the 221/221, .558"/.558", 116 LSA cam. Are you talking about going to the Comp XE-R 226/226, .585"/.585"? I think there will be a very nice gain from the added duration and more aggressive ramps. It would be nice on a 112 LSA. However, I'd double check piston-to-valve clearance.

I called MTI several month ago. No help at all! They couldn't get me off the phone fast enough. Trevor D thats the Comp cam I am looking at. But I lift Comp quoted was smaller 561. 580 would be nice. I wish the MTI was a 221-558. Not that lucky. With stageI H/C, ls6 intake, long tube headers, no cats, no mufflers the car puts 368 to the ground running a tad rich. Only thing I can think of holding the HP back must be the cam. Troy

Ask Terry Burger. He knows everything.

LMAO Bear!

There's also been advancements by leaps and bounds on port work in the heads. You might shoot Jayson Cohen an e-mail at jcohenmti@aol.com to see what he would charge to update your heads. Being such an early package, the cam must be pretty small. The 226/226 that Comp told you about on the phone is their XE grind. The ramp rates aren't quite as aggressive as the XE-R grinds. If you do have your heads updated, have them install a set of dual springs for reliability. I'm running .581" lift with the Comp 918 springs with no problems thus far (knock on wood!), but a set of dual springs would be recommended if you do pull the heads off anyways. Have you considered the same cam I'm running? I know that MTI carries it, and it will keep you safe on p. to v. clearance. It makes some AWESOME power, and it's crazy how streetable it is! You do have quite a bit of power to gain considering the early grind and the fact that it's not even a 221/221. When you e-mail Jayson, you might also ask him about the cam. Some of their sales people there now weren't around back in early '99, so they probably wouldn't know.

I have not really looked at what I consider big lift cams for several reasons. My goal should be easy to obtain(400rwhp) with the items already on it. My wish not to take the heads off. Other issues with the car(brakes) and what I use this car for(instruct at PCA events). I need this car to live for hours between 3K and 6.5K all weekend long. The car is very fast on the track right now and has been for the last 2 years trouble free, but others are now catching up. The cams out now should get me the 400rwhp.
