I haven't heard of this done very much, but my stock timing cover doesn't clear my oil pump. How hard is it to modify the stock cover to make it work, I have a deadline for this car to be done and this is my one and only snag so far. Thanks for your help!

Grind the inside of it some until it fits. If its the bolts in the may on the pump then grind the heads of the bolts a little bit.

How come it doesnt fit in the first place though? Whats parts do you have behind the front cover?

 

Did you install a double roller chain? Mine is tight too. I'm thinking of going with button head cap screws instead of the hex head screws to hold on the pump then modify the cover if needed.

 

Ya, I have a Rollmaster double roller timing chain and an SLP oil pump.

 

Oil pump is shimmed out due to the double chain. Common issue. You grind the inside of the cover until i fits. I used a black marker to "paint" ( I dont have the dychemel blue or what ever its called )the inside of the cover to see where it hits. Then grind until it doesnt. I used a dremel with a grinding wheel on it.

 

I have ground quite a bit off the cover and still seem to have about an 1/8" gap at the bottom two corners of the timing cover (Granted this is with the shims and w/o the cover gasket in place) Surely the clearance shouldn't be that far off, or am I wrong? I am getting ready to just buy a different pump in hopes that it is something in this particular pump....

 

Make sure your oil pump and cam gear are inline with each other. Then put the cover gasket in place and check it out. THe gasket should keep the cover parallel to the block.

 

If it is the slp oil pump it does not have to be shimmed.
