But back to your question; I have almost no doubt the valves are bent :-/ It sounds like it could be bad enough to have bent a few other things too :-/ Especially if you are finding metal bits in the oil/pan/dipstick.

What type of gauge do you recommend to check piston travel? We're gonna pull the heads off first and go from there.
