I have been reading about lots of the popular cams for stock headed cars have a surging problem at 1000 RPMs or so. What causes this and can any of it be alleviated?
Most of it is tuning, or lack of it. The PCM is incapable of truly "learning" a cam that is very far from the stock specs. Too big of a cam will run okay at WOT, but have problems at part throttle.
The (bigger) cam isn't getting the air it needs in the way it needs it (air vs. fuel flow, etc).

If your car is surging with the cam, then SSINFUL is right, tuning is going to be the only way to get rid of it.
The surging problem really only shows its ugly side when you are roaming through parking lots in 1st, or in stop and go traffic. It is at these times your car will feel more like a bronco ride than a C5. Just bop the gas, or put the car in neutral, and it will go away. Otherwise the surging isn't going to be a problem.
I wouldn't worry about it. I would put my marbles into finding a cam that will idle with stock tuning. A bad idling cam is a pain in the **** <img border="0" alt="[judgement]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[judgement]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" />

Surging at idle is usually a sign that the car is running too rich at that rpm. You can drill out the TB idle air hole or maybe use a tx fitting and raise up the screw under the Throttle.
My car has been extensively dynotuned and streettuned with LS1 Edit and it will still surge at idle, which for me is 1000-1100. But I am running difficult combo of a 242 duration cam and 39 lb injectors.

I wondered the same damn thing for 6 months before I installed my T1 and decided one day just to install the damn thing and I am more then happy with it. My suggestion would be just go for it. I have a few friends with the B1 cam and they have no idle issues .
