5.3 heads benefit???
What benefit would I get from some 5.3 heads?I keep seeing some of you guys are running them.Say with my limited mods and a home port job? I may be able to get these until I can save up for some stage II heads. And after the heads I'll be thinking cam.
Thanks guys.
Thanks guys.

Re: 5.3 heads benefit???
Trevor, I've got a set of 5.3 heads and with them milled .030" I believe you get 11.1 compression, without milling I think it's 10.5 compared to the LS1's 10.0:1 compression.

blackLS1,
More compression will do a couple of things.
One you will have to run a higher octane. Most of us run the good stuff anyways so that's not a problem. More octane will reduce the likleyhood of pre-ignition( called knock and detonation )
Two the car will gain torque through out the RPM range. This means you will also gain HP everywhere. Dave Vizzard once said that rasing the compression was the poor mans power adder. BTW do a www.google.com search for David Vizzard if you want to really learn about engines. If he's beyond you go to www.howstuffworks.com that site is awesome in how it explains things.
The best way to get more compression is with a smaller combustion chamber. I can write a hole page about this, but when people talk about raising compression and it's on your motor. YOu want to hear, smaller combustion chamber, and milling the heads. If it's for a competitors car, hearing things like pop up pistons is what you want to hear. I'd go on forever on this, but that's a good start.
