Engine stalled on freeway, and will not start again, help
My engine stalled out on the freeway today, and would not start, I need suggestions please.
I was on the freeway today, travelling at around 75 in my SS, and all of a sudden the SES light comes on, and at the same time, I start to hear some ticking under the hood. I start to slow down and start puling into the emergency lane, and as soon as I put her in neutral, and let go of the throttle, the engine stalled. When the car stopped, I try to start her up again, but she will only turn but will not start. I try to give her some gas, and she start at higher rpm, but will not sustain idle, plus I can hear the ticking noise again. I am taking her back to MMS on Monday morning to see what is wrong, and I would like to be equiped with some knowledge so I can ask the correct questions.
Here are my vehicle specs and mods:
2002 Camaro SS with SLP 345 HP package, 6,500 miles.
Mods (4,500 miles, 2 months ago, only street and freeway driving, never been raced):
MMS Throttle Body, SLP Bellow, GMAF, MMS 218 Cam package including MMS valve springs, installed and tuned by MMS, JBA Headers, Random Tech Y-Pipe and Cats, Nology plug wires, and Silver Stone Plugs, BMR tunnel brace, MMS LCA and Panhard rod, and SLP STB.

Yep, it sounds like a broken spring to me as well. What's the lift on the 218? If the valve moves freely and doesn't seem to be bent, I'd have them swap a complete new set of Comp 918 springs in. Then I'd have them do a compression test on the cylinder that had the broken spring to be sure that the valve is seating properly. Are they still using Comp 941 springs?

The car will not even start, it will turn but will not start. I hope nothing more serious is wrong with her.
I am considering either to de-mod the engine, which includes the cam, valve springs, and computer, or have the MMS springs swaped out to Comp 918.
I amd also considering upgrading my AAA membership to have it cover 100 miles of towing, just in case the same thing happens.

Don't try to start it again! If you dropped a valve, it's just bouncing off of the head of the piston. How new is the MMS setup? They should warranty all of the work, so if it is something from their setup, such as a spring, then they should take care of any damage IMO. If it is the springs, I'd have them put a set of the 918's on and call it good.

Man this stuff just pisses me off. Im going to get MMS heads/cam in August and I see their sales people pushing their springs. Do they not read the forums and see how their spings are holding up!? They even told me that the only reason 918 springs last is because no one revs them over 6100 stock limiter. Half the people here with 918's are going to 6800 and higher rpm with no problems. When I told him this he said they would install them for me but they dont know what size shim other shops are using to get the springs to work right, and they would just bind up and break on me.
If you got the MMS springs, do NOT let them put them back in. Get the comp 918's..No matter how hard they push you to try their springs. it sucks that they are willing to get a bad rep by letting people try out these pos springs. Hope they correct this in the future. Ill be going with 918's when I have them install them. Sorry to head about your misfortune. Hope it gets corrected how you see fit. Let us know the results.

they don't just usually die like that even with a spring failure. Have you ever ran real low on gas? It could be a seized fuel pump

Gas is 3/4 tank, 93 Octane (Mixed 100 Octane Racing Gas and 91 Octane Super Unleaded), I don't think it is low at all.
Will update the forum when MMS get back to me next week.

The MMS valve springs are being replaced with Comp 918 valve springs. The SES other problem relates with both the broken valve spring and the Nology wires and Silverstone Plugs, which are being replaced with MSD wires and NGK spark plugs.
I also upgraded my AAA membership to AAA+ just in case, in the future. I'll remember to remind Al about the MMS spring replacement deal.

Re: Engine stalled on freeway, and will not start again, help
Al tried to tell me the 918's were a bad choice for my MMS 218 cam and would most likely fail. He recommended the MMS springs. I'm sure glad I did my homework on this board first and went with the 918's.
