Default opinions needed on new Oil setup please

My car has been using a quart of Mobil 1 10w30 every 1000 miles now. I want to try royal purple and I noticed they have a 15w40. Would this be OK for my car? I am hoping this will work better than the mobil 1 for cutting down on oil consumption by having a bit of a thicker oil. I think since its thicker less will get past the rings, etc. I already removed the PCV setup and have a breather on each valve cover.

Does this sound good?

My car has been using quite a bit of oil and I don't know if the 15w-40 would hurt my engine in any way. This is one of my last ditch efforts to cut oil consumption by using a thicker oil so less might get past the rings than with the 10w-30. Patman, anybody else?

That 15w40 oil is probably a tad too thick, it'll just cut down on a bit of power, you'll lose MPG, and the engine will get a little bit more wear on the cold start (even with it being summertime) since it won't flow as fast. Also, if you still have warranty to worry about, the 15w40 won't be covered under warranty.

What you want to do is simply find an oil that is on the thicker end of the 10w30 scale. Mobil 1 is on the thin end of the 30 weight oils, so trying something like RP, Redline or Amsoil should cut down your consumption. This way the oil is slightly thicker but not by too much. Many people have noticed a significant drop in consumption by simply switching to another brand of 10w30.

The problem is, if an engine is consuming a serious amount of oil, it's not going to get any better, eventually that will have to be addressed mechanically speaking. Don't try to mask it by running oil that is too thick for the engine. The LS1 (as it stands from the factory) has tighter tolerances than a pure race engine would, so keep the thicker oils for those race engines that need it.
